Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Facts And Information

I wake up every couple of weeks and my right arm is numb and my right hand occasionally feels achy. My doctor says I have carpal tunnel syndrome in the hand. What is carpal tunnel syndrome and what can be done to help this numbness and pain?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is part of a group of syndromes called “repetitive strain injuries.” Repeated movements or activities that chronically irritate tissues as they move in their normal pattern cause these injuries. While carpal tunnel syndrome is the classic repetitive strain disorder, there are many different types of syndromes that are quite similar. Carpal tunnel syndrome is frequently seen in individuals who frequently type at keyboards or do other activities where they, for any reason, persistently have what is called in Australia as “Kangaroo Paw” – meaning the wrist is constantly in a position like a kangaroo paw. The wrist is stressed by being in this position. Essentially, over time, this overuse and stress cycle causes irritation to nerves that get caught passing through the soft tissue tunnels that exist in the wrist.

In the case of carpal tunnel syndrome, it is the median nerve that gets irritated as it passes through the carpal tunnel – which is a canal in which the nerve normally passes uninjured. Diagnosing this problem can be as simple as a brief physical exam. The doctor is able to tap over the carpal tunnel, and this tapping can bring out the symptoms related to this disorder. The diagnosis of carpal tunnel can also involve electrical tools such as a nerve conduction study called “electrical myography” or EMG, which can diagnose if the median nerve is functioning properly.

Therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome is normally two fold. One approach is to treat the pain and cool off the inflammation. This can involve using anti-inflammatory medicines or to inject strong anti-inflammatory agents called corticosteroids. Corticosteroid injections may be injected near the nerve passing through the canal, often providing direct relief to the area. Another approach is to change the behavior that causes the problem in the first place. This can be done through education, as well as by preventing the range of motion that causes the irritation such as by placing a splint or brace on the wrist. Effective ergonomic positioning and other interventions that affect our biomechanics may also help in managing this disorder. Surgery is normally the last resort for treatment and can also offer significant relief.
