Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain is prescribed for the treatment of a migraine attack with or without the presence of an aura (visual disturbances, usually sensations of halos or flickering lights, which precede an attack). The injectable form is also used to relieve cluster headache attacks. (Cluster headaches come on in waves, then disappear for long periods of time. They are limited to one side of the head, and occur mainly in men.)
Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain cuts headaches short. It will not reduce the number of attacks you experience.
Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain is a prescription medicine for the acute treatment of migraine attacks, with or without aura, in adults. You should not take Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain if you have certain types of heart disease, a history of stroke or TIAs, peripheral vascular disease, Raynaud syndrome, or blood pressure that is uncontrolled. If you have risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or are a smoker, you should be evaluated by your doctor before taking Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain. Very rarely, certain people, even some without heart disease, have had serious heart-related problems when taking Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain.
Do not take Imitrex Medication if the headache you are experiencing is not like other migraines that you have had. Do not take this medication if you have heart disease including angina (chest pain), history of a heart attack, or high blood pressure. Serious, even fatal, side effects involving the heart have been reported with Imitrex Medication. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed by your doctor. More medication will not further treat symptoms. If your symptoms are not being treated, contact your doctor.
What Is Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Imitrex Medication is a headache medicine. It is believed to work by causing vasoconstriction (narrowing) of arteries and veins that supply blood to your head. Imitrex Medication tablets and injections are used to treat vascular headaches such as migraine and cluster headaches. Imitrex Medication will not prevent migraines or cluster headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It will only treat a migraine or cluster headache that is already occurring. Imitrex Medication may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Do not take Imitrex Medication if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as: isocarboxazid (Marplan) tranylcypromine (Parnate) or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last 14 days have basilar or hemiplegic migraine headaches have had a heart attack have angina (chest pain), or have another type of heart disease are experiencing a headache that is not like other migraines that you have had have taken an ergot-based medication within the last 24 hours --ergot-based medicines include methysergide (Sansert), ergotamine (Ergostat, Medihaler Ergotamine), dihydroergotamine mesylate (D.H.E., Migranal Nasal Spray), and ergotamine combination products (Cafergot, Ercaf, Wigraine, Cafatine, Cafatine-PB, Cafetrate)
Before taking Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication tell your doctor if you have taken:
Another migraine medicine such as almotriptan (Axert), frovatriptan (Frova) naratriptan (Amerge) rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT) or zolmitriptan (Zomig, Zomig-ZMT) in the past 24 hours;
Taking Imitrex Medication may be dangerous if you have any of the conditions, or have taken any of the medications, listed above.
Before taking Imitrex Medication, tell your doctor if you have risk factors for heart disease such as:

high blood pressure a family history of heart disease high cholesterol (a type of fat), are overweight, diabetes, smoke cigarettes, are postmenopausal, are a male over 40 years of age have liver disease have kidney disease have seizures or epilepsy.
You may not be able to take Imitrex Medication, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
Imitrex Medication is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether Imitrex Medication will harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Imitrex Medication passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing infant. Do not take Imitrex Medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How To Take Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Take Imitrex Medication tablets exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Take one tablet as soon as you notice symptoms of a migraine, or at any time during an attack. If your symptoms go away, but then return, you can take additional doses as needed every 2 hours, up to a maximum of 300 mg in 24 hours, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Never take more than this amount. If your symptoms do not improve at all, call your doctor before taking any more doses of Imitrex Medication. More medication will not further treat symptoms. Store Imitrex Medication at room temperature away from moisture, heat, light, and the reach of children. Throw away any unused medicine on the expiration date.
Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain tablets should be swallowed whole, with liquid. If you have had no relief 2 hours after taking Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain Tablets, you may take a second dose of up to 100 milligrams, if your doctor advises it. If the headache returns, you may take additional doses at intervals of at least 2 hours. You should not take more than 300 milligrams in one day. If your headache returns after you have had an Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain Injection, you may take single Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain Tablets, at intervals of at least 2 hours, up to a maximum of 200 milligrams in a day.
Missed Dose Of Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Since Imitrex Medication is taken to treat migraines or cluster headaches as they occur and not to prevent them, missing a dose is not a problem. Take only the doses you need, according to your doctor's instructions.
Overdose Of Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of a Imitrex Medication overdose might include tremor, redness, or a warm feeling in your arms and legs, irregular breathing, large pupils; an uncoordinated feeling; and chest pain.
Side Effects Of Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain.

More common side effects may include : Burning sensation, dizziness or vertigo, feeling of heaviness, feeling of tightness, flushing, mouth and tongue discomfort, muscle weakness, nausea (nasal spray), neck pain and stiffness, numbness, pressure sensation, redness at the site of injection, sinus or nasal discomfort (nasal spray), sore throat, tingling, unusual taste (nasal spray), vomiting (nasal spray), warm/cold sensation

Less common or rare side effects may include : Abdominal discomfort, agitation, allergic reactions (severe), anxiety, asthma, backache, backflow of stomach contents, bleeding between periods, bleeding in ears, nose or throat, breast tenderness, burning/numbness of tongue, changes in heart rhythm, chills, cold sensation, confusion, constipation, cough, depression, diarrhea, difficult or labored breathing, difficult or painful urination, difficulty concentrating, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, drowsiness/calmness, dry mouth, ear infection, ear pain, exaggerated feeling of well-being, eye irritation, facial pain, fainting, fatigue, feeling strange, fever, general feeling of illness, headache, hearing loss, hearing disturbance, heavy feeling, hives, incoordination, increased urination, intolerance of noise or light, itching, jaw discomfort, joint problems, muscle cramps, muscle pain or tenderness, painful menstruation, pressure in chest, rapid and throbbing heartbeat, rash, ringing in the ears, rise or fall in blood pressure (temporary), sensation of lightness, sensitivity to noise or heat, shivering, shortness of breath, sinus inflammation, sinus or nasal discomfort, skin eruptions, skin redness or tenderness, sleep disturbances, smell disturbances, stomach problems, sweating, swelling, tearing, thirst, tight feeling in head, tightness in chest, tremors, vision changes or loss
In addition to the above side effects, people taking Imitrex For Headache And Migraine Pain for cluster headache may experience nausea, a "pins and needles" sensation, vomiting, or wheezing.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Imitrex Medication and seek emergency medical attention:

an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives) severe or prolonged chest pain or an irregular heartbeat.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take Imitrex Medication and talk to your doctor if you experience:

nausea drowsiness or dizziness tingling, flushing, warmth, redness, or heaviness in a body part.
Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.
Precautions When Taking Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Do not take Imitrex Medication if the headache you are experiencing is not like other migraines that you have had.
Drug Interactions With Imitrex Headache And Migraine Medication
Do not take Imitrex Medication if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as:

Taking Imitrex Medication within 24 hours of any of the medicines listed above may be dangerous. Before taking Imitrex Medication, tell your doctor if you are taking a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) such as citalopram (Celexa), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), or sertraline (Zoloft). You may not be able to take Imitrex Medication, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you are taking any of the medicines listed. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with Imitrex Medication. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including herbal products.
